Mars received his B.S. in Biochemistry in 2015 from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  His undergraduate research includes the insertion of genetic markers into Saccharomyces cereviseae to study the mechanisms involved in meiotic crossover, and the synthesis of bacterial quorum sensing molecule derivatives.  Future research goals include the investigation of protein structure and function and molecular evolution with ab initio methods.
